What's Your Risk Tolerance?

You've probably been asked this before in relation to your investments. There are many outdated approaches to assessing investment risk that have dominated the industry for decades, but let me walk you through the approach we use at M Financial Planning Services.

The old way of assessing risk - by having you guess whether you are "moderately conservative" or "fairly aggressive", or perhaps by assigning you a risk category according to your age - are simply too vague and frankly, inaccurate.

We treat our clients as individuals, and use a quantitative approach to pinpoint how much risk you want, how much you actually have in your portfolio, and how much you'll need to help reach your financial goals.

The questions are simple, mathematical assessments based on real dollars to determine how much you're willing to risk in exchange for an opportunity at a specific gain. The entire process should take less than five minutes. Our planning team will evaluate your results and review them with you.

How much risk should you have?

It's important to realize that your risk tolerance will change throughout your life - perhaps even more often than you'd think. That's why we re-assess your risk number at least once a year, if not more.

If you’re not sure everything is working together the way it should be, you’re not alone.

A second opinion can help you see what’s working—and what may need attention.
